How GPS ends up in your photos

When location access is on for the camera, your phone writes latitude, longitude, altitude and often the compass direction into every photo it takes. Drones and many modern cameras do the same. The map pin is invisible in the picture, but it travels with the file wherever you send it.

How to check if a photo has location data

  • iPhone: open the photo in Photos and swipe up. A map means location is stored.
  • Android: in Google Photos, swipe up on the photo and look for a location.
  • Windows: right click, Properties, Details, GPS section.
  • Mac: open in Preview, Tools, Show Inspector, GPS tab.

Turn off location for future photos

  • iPhone: Settings, Privacy and Security, Location Services, Camera, Never.
  • Android: Camera app, Settings, turn off Location tags or Save location.

Visible location vs hidden location

GPS tags are the hidden part. The photo itself can still give a place away: a street sign, a house number, a car plate, a view from a window. Removing GPS does not change the picture. Cover visible clues with Redact an image or hide plates with Blur license plates.

How do I remove GPS location from a photo?

Can someone see where my photo was taken?

Yes, if the file still has GPS tags. Any EXIF viewer, and many photo apps, show the coordinates on a map, often accurate to a few meters. Removing the tags closes that gap.

Does sending a photo remove its location?

Not reliably. Some apps strip location when they compress a photo, but email, cloud links, AirDrop and sending as a file keep it. Remove it yourself before sharing.

How do I stop my phone from adding location to photos?

iPhone: Settings, Privacy and Security, Location Services, Camera, set to Never. Android: open the Camera app settings and turn off location tags. This only affects new photos, so clean existing ones here.

Does this remove the date and camera model too?
